Description

Small and robust, the Havanese is a well-built little dog. The muzzle is full, with slight tapering towards the nose. The top of the head is flattened, while the back of it is rounded. The Havanese’s ears are long and floppy.

The Havanese’s chest is strong and deep, adding to the sturdy appearance. The tail curls up slightly, and has a plume-like appearance.

Look

The Havanese has a beautiful double coat with thick hair instead of fur. The silky hair of the outer coat is soft and light, and the undercoat is sometimes completely absent. If you stroke a Havanese, you will feel a silky texture, tough some Havanese dogs have a more frizzy appearance.

The Havanese is a great dog for people with allergies, as they rarely shed. If you don’t want to deal with daily hair-brushing, the Havanese is quite comfortable with a clipped coat.

Learning

The Havanese is a clever dog and easy to train. Start young, and your Havanese pup will remember his lessons for all of his life. The Havanese is often difficult to house-train, but some owners find it simpler to teach their Havanese to use a litter box. As with all dogs, the Havanese will really shine with socialisation from an early age. Being exposed to various people, animals, and situations will help your Havanese gain confidence.  Despite its small size, the Havanese does very well in dog sports such as canine agility, and can also be trained to be an assistance dog.

Temperament

The Havanese is a sweet-tempered dog that loves everyone, including strangers, children, and other animals. They are so affectionate that they will stick to you like Velcro, following you from room to room.

Their affectionate natures mean that Havanese dogs often suffer from separation anxiety, so should not be left alone for too long. An unhappy Havanese may develop bad habits such as chewing and barking.

Do not spoil this breed: they are clever enough to figure out how to manipulate you to get what they want.

Living with

This breed will happily live in an apartment, though the Havanese is comfortable in any type of home so long as he or she has company. This is not a dog for someone who spends long hours away from home. If you make time for your Havanese, he or she will reward you with tons of affection and hours of fun and play. They are quite energetic for their size, but play and daily walks will help to use up excess energy.
