Description

Dobermann Pinschers are a medium sized dog that is powerful and muscular. They are quite elegant in appearance.  The head should be shaped like a blunt wedge from the front and from the side. The eyes are almond in shape and medium sized. The eye colour in black Doberman’s will be brownish and in red, blue and fawn colour dogs the eye colour will blend with the dogs coat colour. Dobermann’s jaws are broad on the top and powerful and its teeth should make a scissor bite. Dobermann’s ears should be left natural but in some parts of the world they can be cropped to give them that pointy look. The same can be said about the tail; in some parts of the world it can be docked while in others it can be left natural.

Origin

The Dobermann Pinscher originates from Germany and still holds the name of the first breeder; Friedrich Louis Dobermann. Dobermann was a part time dog catcher and enjoyed breeding dogs that were particularly sharp in nature. The Dobermann was an early type of Rottweiler mixed with a type of shepherd and over time we got the breed we know today.

Look

Dobermann’s can have a few different colour schemes. These include: black, red, blue, and fawn. They can also have rust colour markings on the muzzle, throat, and forechest.

Dobermann’s are smooth-haired and the coat should be short, hard and thick. The Doberman sheds moderately. Regular brushing will help keep him and your home neat.  As with any dog, brushing before a bath helps eliminate more dead hair, which leaves less hair to shed. Your vacuum cleaner will work longer if you brush your Doberman regularly.

Health

There are few health problems that may arise with Dobermann Pinschers. Before you decide to buy a Dobe, you should consider the following risk factors that may arise with your NEW DOGGY and remember that this specific breed may require more health monitoring:

1. Cervical spondylitis (Wobblers syndrome)
2. Von Willebrands disease (inherited blood disorder)
3. Congenital Heart Defects
4. Hip Dysplasia

Learning

Dobermanns are intelligent and fairly easy to train with the right type of training and some dedication. Socialization is very important for this breed at a young age. This will allow the dog to be less jumpy around new people or places. Your Dobermann needs lots of attention and should not be given any slack while training. They will become unruly and stubborn if allowed to have their own way.

Temperament

When you first look at a Dobermann you might be intimidated and a little frightened of him but you should not worry because their disposition is friendly and calm. They are very devoted to their families and do well as a protector. They are very keen dogs and enjoy working. They have been known to be police dogs so that shows what kind of disposition and demeanour they can have. Overall, they are a great family dog and will be devoted to protecting and loving your family. If you plan on owning a Dobermann, be prepared to work. They are a fantastic breed and you will fall in love with them, they just need owners who can handle them and are able to have authority over them.

Living with

Living conditions: Doberman Pinschers are made to live in larger areas but can live in a flat if they have to the ability to exercise outside on a daily bases. They are not meant to be left alone or meant to stay outside by themselves. They require human interaction and leadership. They do well with families as they are natural protectors. Dobermanns are not well adjusted to cold climates. This does not mean they cannot live in a cold climate, it just means that you should be mindful if you live in a colder environment.

Exercise: As with any dogs, Dobes should be taken on daily walks. These walks help with anxiety of the animal, while allowing it to get the necessary exercise it needs. They do like to be active so daily playing will help with the dog while they are at home. As stated before, they do not like to be isolated. If you have a yard and want to let him or her out to play, you should join and have fun together.
