About Brabant Griffon breed
Description
This dog is a cousin to the better-known Brussels Griffon. They have a Pug-like muzzle, with a distinct overbite. This gives them quite a stern expression. The Brabant Griffon has a flattened face and dropped ears (described as tulip ears). The body is compact but strong. Although the tail was traditionally docked, this is now illegal in many regions.
Origin: Belgium
Look
Unlike the Brussels Griffon, the Brabant Griffon does not have long hair on its face. The Brabant Griffon’s fur is short, and typically red in colour. It is also possible to find Brabants with black fur or black mask markings. The Brabant Griffon’s short fur is easy to care for, and they only shed moderately.
Health
The Brabant Griffon is quite a healthy breed, but is prone to a few health conditions:
- Arthritis
- Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS)
- Epilepsy
- Skin disease
At Newdoggy.com, we recommend that you buy your dog from reputable breeders, use genetic testing and good breeding practices to remove genetic conditions from their breeding lines.
Learning
Although they tend to be quite independent and occasionally stubborn, the Brabant Griffon is an intelligent breed. This intelligence means that they can become bored easily. Your Brabant Griffon will be very happy to learn new tricks, and will surprise you with his/her versatility.
Temperament
The Brabant Griffon can be cheeky! Despite their serious faces, Brabant Griffons are funny little dogs that love to play and enjoy life. These dogs are usually gentle, and often cuddly. Although friendly and sociable (even with strangers) Brabant Griffons can easily become bored. You’ll need to make sure that your Griffon has toys to play with (puzzle toys are ideal), as well as providing proper exercise and play-time.
Living with
The Brabant Griffon is a great family pet. They are good with children; however, this breed is better for older children who will play gently with the Brabant Griffon. As the Brabant Griffon is a brachycephalic breed, it is important not to let them overheat. Avoid strenuous exercise, and on hot days, make sure to keep your dog cool.
As the Brabant Griffon is sociable, they are a better choice for a person who works from home, or who can take their dog to work. They are sensitive to heat and cold, so while they will enjoy playing in the garden or yard, they really should live indoors.
