About American Akita breed
Description
The America Akita is very similar to its Japanese cousin; it is in fact descended from the Akita Inu, as American servicemen stationed there during World War II brought some of these dogs back home with them. Akitas have a large and powerful build, with a broad, deep chest and a heavy, triangular head. The fuzzy triangular ears are almost fox-like in appearance, in contrast to the heavy, bear-like head. The body a little long compared to the dog’s height, and the tail is fuzzy and is held up in a curl over the dog’s rump. The feet are cat-like, though proportionate to the size of the dog.
Origin: Japan/USA
Look
Just like the Akita Inu, the American Akita has a thick double coat. The outer layer has stiffer guard hairs, whereas the inner layer is fluffier to provide warmth. The fur is fluffy but not long. Akitas shed heavily, though daily brushing will help remove the worst of the loose fur.
All different coat colours and markings are acceptable, including brindle, solid colours, pinto, and mask markings.
Health
While the American Akita is generally a healthy dog, they are prone to a few health conditions:
• Hip dysplasia
• Elbow dysplasia
• Various immune system conditions, such as Cushing’s syndrome, Type 1 Diabetes, and Hypothyroidism
• Gastric dilation (bloat)
• Von Willebrand’s Disease
• Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
• Microphthalmia
• Primary Glaucoma
• Pseudohyperkalemia
• Immune Sensitivity to vaccines, drugs, anaesthetics and tranquilizers

Learning
Like most dogs, the Akita needs early socialisation and training to develop its best characteristics. Akitas tend to become bored quickly, and are often strong-willed or even stubborn. Fortunately, these traits are matched with a great intelligence, which will help in training. Positive reinforcement training would probably suit this breed best, as the American Akita need a calm but firm trainer who will reward them when it is appropriate to do so. They will soon learn that the right behaviour means a reward for them, whether it’s a toy, a treat, or a pat. Despite their reputation as a challenging breed to train, Akitas are typically easy to house train.
Temperament
The American Akita shares many traits in common with its Japanese ancestor. They are loyal and brave, and tend to be protective of their owners. Akitas can be possessive of food and toys, so obedience training from an early age is essential to avoid problems. They are suspicious of strangers, so you’ll need to be sure to train and socialise your American Akita properly, otherwise your dog may become aggressive towards strangers. They are intelligent and need stimulation, otherwise they become bored: be sure to take your dog walking or hiking, and to play with them daily.
