Description

The Cockapoo is a small to medium-sized dog, created by cross-breeding Miniature Poodles with Cocker Spaniels. There are four size variants: Teacup Toy, Toy, Miniature, and Standard (also called Maxi). Cockapoos have round faces, floppy ears, and large almond-shaped eyes.

Keep in mind that since the Cockapoo is hybrid breed, even puppies from the same litter can look very different, Some Cockapoos look more like Poodles, whilst some more closely resemble Cocker Spaniels. First generation hybriud puppies (where one parent is a Cocker Spaniel and the other is a Poodle) are more varied in appearance. Second generation puppies (where both parents are Cockapoos) are a little more uniform, though some pups in the litter will take after their grandparents. Third generation Cockapoo puppies have the most uniform appearance.

Look

Since the Cockapoo is a hybrid dog, their coats range from wavy to curly. The Cockapoo does not shed, and needs daily brushing to avoid tangles, as well as the occasional clip or trim. More “Poodle-type” Cockapoos can be good pets for those with allergies, but Cockapoos that inherit the Cocker-spaniel fur might be less suitable.

There is a wide variety of Cockapoo fur colours. Solid colours include black, chocolate, apricot, red, blonde, white, and “faded” variants of these colours. Cockapoos can also have patterned coats: common patterns include tuxedo, phantom, tricolour, sable, parti, and roan.

Health

Fortunately the Cockapoo is generally a healthy dog, but the breed is prone to a few health conditions:

• Cataracts

• Allergies
• Liver disease
• Ear infections

Learning

The Cockapoo is enthusiastic and very bright. They have the intelligence of a Poodle, combined with the sweetness and energy of a Cocker Spaniel. Early socialisation is important to help your Cockapoo become confident in a variety of situations.

Temperament

The Cockapoo was bred to be a companion dog, and thrives off attention and affection. They are incredible friendly and even-tempered, making them ideal family dogs. The Cockapoo gets on well with children, and would make a brilliant companion for kids that love to play out in the garden.

Living with

Cockapoos are energetic, and need to be walked briskly at least twice a day. They are very playful, and will appreciate playtime in addition to walks. Avoid strenuous exercise when they are young, s this can damage their joints.

Although Cockapoos are friendly to everyone, they are especially attached to family members. Cockapoos can suffer from separation anxiety: they hate being left alone, and can become bored, restless, and even destructive. It is worth doing some training to help your dog cope with being left home alone. You can also leave fun toys and puzzles at home to keep your Cockapoo entertained when you are out.
