Few orthopedic conditions strike fear into the hearts of dog owners quite like hip dysplasia. As one of the most common skeletal diseases seen in veterinary medicine, it is a leading cause of chronic canine pain and mobility issues.
Understanding how the condition develops, recognizing the early warning signs, and knowing how to manage it can make all the world of difference in giving your furry best friend a comfortable, active life.
Anatomy 101: What is Hip Dysplasia?
To understand hip dysplasia, it helps to look at the anatomy of a healthy hip. The canine hip joint is a classic ball-and-socket joint, structurally identical to our own. The rounded head of the femur (the “ball”) rotates smoothly within the pelvic socket (the acetabulum). In a healthy dog, strong ligaments hold the bones tightly together, while a thick layer of slick cartilage acts as a shock-absorbing cushion.
In a dog with hip dysplasia, this intricate joint fails to develop properly during their growth phase. The socket may be too shallow, or the surrounding ligaments, muscles, and connective tissue may be overly lax.

Subluxation: Because the joint is loose, the ball begins to partially slip out of the socket—a process known as subluxation.

Degeneration: Over time, the abnormal grinding of bone against bone alters the shape of the joint surfaces. This constant friction erodes the protective cartilage, eventually triggering painful osteoarthritis and joint degeneration.

Which Dogs Are Prone to Hip Dysplasia?
While any dog can theoretically develop hip dysplasia, it is heavily linked to genetics and body size.

High-Risk Breeds: Large and giant breeds are disproportionately affected. Common sufferers include German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Rottweilers, Great Danes, and Saint Bernards. Interestingly, not all large dogs are vulnerable; breeds like Greyhounds and Borzois rarely develop the condition.

The symptoms of hip dysplasia vary depending on the severity of the joint looseness and how far the osteoarthritis has progressed. In the early stages, signs are tied to joint instability; later on, they are driven by chronic pain and stiffness.
Watch out for these classic warning signs:

Reluctance to Move: A sudden hesitation or refusal to climb stairs, jump into the car, run, or stand up from a resting position.

The “Bunny Hop”: When running, the dog may lift and swing both hind legs forward simultaneously, resembling a hopping rabbit, rather than alternating their legs.

Narrow Stance & Swaying: A noticeable swaying or wobbling in the hindquarters while walking.

Atrophy vs. Hypertrophy: Because dogs instinctively shift their weight forward to protect their painful hips, you may notice a visible loss of muscle mass (atrophy) in their hind thighs, paired with overdeveloped, bulging shoulder muscles from carrying their weight on their front legs.

Pain and Stiffness: Stiffness is usually worst in the mornings or after a heavy bout of exercise.
Veterinary Diagnosis
If you notice any of these symptoms, your veterinarian will perform a comprehensive physical and orthopedic evaluation.
The vet will manipulate your dog’s hind legs, checking for joint laxity, a grinding sensation (crepitus), and signs of pain when the joint is fully extended or flexed. To confirm the diagnosis and grade the severity, the vet will require X-rays (radiographs) or advanced imaging like a CT scan. These images provide a clear view of how deeply the ball sits within the socket and reveal the presence of any secondary bone spurs or arthritis.
Treatment Options: From Medical Management to Surgery
Treatment depends heavily on the dog’s age, weight, lifestyle, and the severity of the joint damage.
1. Conservative (Non-Surgical) Management
For mild cases or older dogs where surgery isn’t an option, a multi-modal approach can keep dogs comfortable:

However, if you own a puppy or a dog at risk of hip dysplasia, you can drastically reduce the likelihood and severity of the condition:
