Human Foods Your Dog Shouldn’t Eat
One of the things that make a responsible dog owner is proper feeding. It is not enough to know what is the best food you can feed your dog with but it is also essential to know what to avoid. Some of the foods which are healthy for humans can be really dangerous for your dog. With the help of our vet we have selected the most toxic human foods for dogs, the ones that must be avoided. These are absolutely no go foods and if you suspect your doggy or puppy has eaten it contact your veterinary as soon as possible.
Chocolate
Chocolate not only contains caffeine but methylxanthines. After ingestion methylxanthines can cause diarrhea, vomiting, heavy panting, excessive thirst and urination, tremors, irregular heartbeat, and – in worst case – death. The darker the chocolate the more methylxanthines it contains, white chocolate has the less. However the smallest quantity of chocolate may cause problem and the best is to completely avoid.
Methylxanthines can be found in cocoa seeds which are used for making coffee and some soda drinks as well. No idea why anyone would ever share a coffee or a soda with a dog but still let us remind you these are also to be avoided.
Milk and Dairy Products
It is true that puppies drink the milk of their mothers and it is fine, but they are now prepared to drink caw milk. Caw milk contains lactose (milk sugar) and dogs do not have the necessary enzyme (lactase) to break it down in order to be digested. Therefore caw milk may cause lactose intolerance which results in vomiting, diarrhea and other digestive problems.
Grapes and Raisins
It is not known yet what substance of grapes is toxic to dogs, the result of ingestion may be very upsetting. Consumption of grapes and raisin can cause severe kidney failure. Less likely but it may also cause diarrhea, vomiting, lack of appetite or dehydration.
Garlic, Onions and Chives
These vegetables are part of the same vegetable family and they can cause severe gastrointestinal irritation and might lead to red blood cell damage. The dog’s urine will become orange to dark red in colour and your dog will be tired all the time. The symptoms will appear in 3-4 days only and in severe case a blood transfusion will be necessary. Remember the stronger the onion, the more toxic it is so if you smell it just go and hide it.
Alcohol
This might sound a joke to give alcohol to your dog but don’t dare to try it. Very dangerous. Even a small amount of alcohol can cause significant intoxication for your dog and lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and central nervous system depression, decreased coordination, breathing difficulties, tremors, seizures, coma and eventually death. If you consider it you will not find it a funny joke to give alcohol to your dog or puppy.
Avocado
Avocado (not only the fruit but the leaves, pits and bark) contains a toxin called persin. Persin may cause upset stomach and breathing difficulties. Worth to know also that persin is not only dangerous to dogs but all sorts of pets you may have in your house and especially to birds.
But not only persin is dangerous to dogs when it comes to avocado. Think about the pit, it is very slippery and can be swallowed accidently when your dog tries to play with it. Swallowed avocado pit may cause the obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract.
Bacon
No!? Yes, it is very dangerous to your dog. It may sound very natural to share your bacon with your hunting dog but foods rich in fat may cause the disease pancreatitis in dogs.
Once your dog has developed pancreatitis his or her pancreas become inflamed and stops functioning correctly and your dogs will have dozens of problems with digestions.
Nuts
Most of the nuts contain high amounts of oil and fats which may cause vomiting and diarrhea and potentially pancreatitis. Avoiding bacon is fine as long as you are not replacing with nuts as the effect will be the same and ever hated.
Yeast Dough
The real problem with yeast dough is not really the dough but the yeast. The raw yeast dough keeps fermenting and generates gas and alcohol in the stomach of the dog. Large amount of gas in the stomach can be painful and cause bloat of the stomach and potentially twist. Alcohol may cause severe health problems (see Alcohol).
Apple Cores
The core of the apple contains a strong poison, cyanide. Cyanide causes dizziness, breathing difficulties, seizures, hyperventilation and even coma. When you finished your apple throw away the core of your apple.
The above foods in different quantities to different dogs in breed, size and age will cause different problems and damage to your dog. Not to experience the exact effect we propose to make absolutely sure that your dog will not consume a bit of the above human foods. You may enjoy them as longs as they are not available to your puppy or dog.
