Ringworm in Dogs: Clearing Up the Myth of the “Worm”
You might have heard of ringworm—that notorious, easily transmitted infection capable of turning a lovingly groomed dog into a patchy, frustrated mess of red lesions and missing fur. In a panic, you likely ran a brush frantically through your dog’s coat, and after making doubly sure that there were no literal, crawling worms to be found, you probably breathed a massive sigh of relief.
Not so fast!
Despite its misleading name, ringworm is not a worm at all. It is a fungal infection, and it certainly isn’t the kind of friendly fungus that grows up as a toadstool on your dog’s forehead. Confusing? Absolutely. But understanding what you’re dealing with is the first step to beating it.
If It’s Not a Worm, What Is It?
Scientifically known as dermatophytosis, ringworm is caused by a microscopic fungus that shares more biological traits with yeasts and molds than with your average Portobello mushroom.
These opportunistic fungi feed on keratin—an essential fibrous protein found in the outer layers of the skin, hair, and nails of animals and humans alike. As the fungus consumes the keratin, it weakens the hair shafts and damages the skin barrier.
While healthy adult dogs with strong immune systems can often fight off exposure, ringworm wreaks havoc on puppies, senior dogs, or any canine with a compromised immune system. It typically shows up as circular, bald patches of skin, raised granulomatous lesions, crusty scabs, or oozing boils. A ringworm infection can also cause painful inflammation around your dog’s claws (onychomycosis). This stubborn disease thrives in poorly managed, damp, overcrowded environments, and it absolutely revels in cases of malnutrition.
The Usual Suspects: Meet the Fungi
There are three primary species of fungi responsible for the vast majority of ringworm cases in dogs. Each has its own unique reservoir and geographic quirks:

1. Microsporum canis: Contrary to what the name might imply, the natural primary host for this fungus is actually the cat! However, it easily spills over to infect dogs, colonizing their skin and fur to cause classic lesions. M. canis is notorious for contaminating the surrounding environment, shedding microscopic spores that can lie in wait for their next victim over long stretches of time. Geographically, it is particularly common in regions like Iran, while having a lower incidence across the rest of the world and remaining completely absent from equatorial Africa.

2. Trichophyton mentagrophytes: The natural reservoir for this species is rodents. Because mice and rats carry it, dogs that love to hunt or dig in rural areas frequently contract it. This fungus is not exclusive to rodents, however, and can easily jump to a wide range of other animals, including our canine companions.

3. Microsporum gypseum: This is a soil-dwelling fungus. It is relatively uncommon compared to the others, but it frequently pops up in dogs, other animals, and humans who inhabit rural environments or regularly take part in agricultural activities and gardening.
The Zoonotic Threat: Can Humans Catch It?
Yes, absolutely. Because these species of fungi are zoonotic—meaning they can easily jump back and forth between animals and humans—this infection will not stop at affecting your dog.
If a dog with ringworm is left untreated and unmanaged, it is only a matter of time before the fungus finds its way to the human members of the household, starting as an itchy, red, circular rash (often with a clear center) on your arms, torso, or scalp. Sharing a home with an untreated ringworm patient makes the entire eradication process twice as difficult, as you risk passing the infection back and forth between pets and people!
While ringworm is rarely life-threatening on its own, it compromises the skin’s natural integrity, opening the door for severe, painful secondary bacterial infections. If your dog suddenly develops a reddened, crusty, hairless circular patch, it’s time to put on a pair of rubber gloves and rush them to your trusted veterinarian.
Diagnosis, Prevention, and Treatment
Diagnosing ringworm requires more than just a visual inspection, as many skin conditions look identical. Veterinarians rely on specific diagnostics, which may include:

A Wood’s lamp (an ultraviolet blacklight that causes certain strains of ringworm to glow fluorescent green).

A microscopic examination of plucked hairs.

A fungal culture (DTM), where hair and skin scrapings are placed in a special medium to let the fungus grow and identify the exact species.

A skin biopsy in stubborn cases.
Managing and Disinfecting the Environment
Because ringworm spores are microscopic and incredibly hardy, treating the dog is only half the battle; you must also wage war on your environment:

Quarantine: Isolate the infected animal in a room with easily washable surfaces (like hard floors) to prevent spores from spreading to carpets and soft furniture.

Deep Cleaning: Disinfect the home thoroughly using vet-approved antifungal cleaners. Wash all dog bedding, blankets, and plush toys in hot water, or discard them if they cannot be thoroughly sanitized.

Screen Other Pets: Bring all other pets in the household to the vet for skin and hair screenings to check for asymptomatic carriage.

Pest Control: Make sure there are no mice, rats, or other vermin shedding spores in your pet’s living areas.
Medical Treatment

Topical Therapy: For mild, localized infections, your vet may prescribe antifungal creams, ointments, or medicated shampoos to apply directly to the lesions. Pro-tip: Your dog will likely need to wear an Elizabethan collar (E-collar) to prevent them from licking off the topical medicine and poisoning themselves.

Systemic Therapy: In more severe or widespread cases, topical creams won’t cut it. Your veterinarian will prescribe oral antifungal medications (such as itraconazole or terbinafine) to clear the infection from the inside out.
Ringworm might be a frustrating, stubborn houseguest, but with prompt veterinary care, strict hygiene, and disciplined treatment, you can evict the fungus before it decides to “put a ring” on you!
